One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that experience often teaches faster than theory.

In technical industries, you can’t rely solely on what you read or study. You have to understand how systems behave in the real world. Working closely with scientific processes, engineering environments, and operational systems gave me exposure to challenges that couldn’t be solved with simple answers.

That hands-on learning shaped how I approach leadership today. I believe the best solutions come from understanding the details — not just from a business perspective, but from the operational reality behind them.

I’ve done nearly every job in biotech, and that helps me meet engineers where they are. I try to be a mentor who encourages exploration across disciplines—not just siloed expertise. Reducing cost per gram of product is a common goal of well-implemented automation—but the pathway to that result is multi-layered. Chris pointed to better process control, sensor feedback, and data historization as foundational tools that reduce waste and optimize quality.

“If you have a valve slightly misaligned during a chromatography step, you might lose product down the drain. A sensor that detects precise valve positioning—and alarms when something’s off—can save tens of thousands in product loss annually.”

Matt added that exception-based reporting allows staff to focus on deviations rather than sifting through mountains of data. “It takes more upfront effort to configure, but once you’re there, it drastically reduces time spent on documentation reviews.”

One of  Dr. Upton’s most significant achievements was his involvement in developing Corning Life Science’s hyper-technology. This initiative focused on achieving higher-density cell culture, a goal that has had a profound impact on bioproduction capabilities. His work has consistently revolved around tackling scalability challenges in cell and gene therapy, aiming to develop cost-effective solutions that enhance accessibility for patients, regardless of financial status.

Seeing the team adapt quickly and deliver exceptional results in such a high-stakes environment was incredibly fulfilling.

On the other hand, coordinating a last-minute relocation to Asia was pretty challenging. Just days before departure, we encountered unexpected regulatory changes that required us to revise the entire visa process, secure new documentation, and adjust travel schedules. Despite the stress, our team’s ability to act swiftly and maintain clear communication with all parties ensured that the relocation was ultimately successful. Moments like these highlight both the complexity and the critical importance of a proactive and adaptable approach to mobility management.
